What Does It Mean to Walk With God?
If someone asked you what it means to “walk with God,” what would you say?
The phrase appears several times throughout Scripture, but it doesn’t describe taking literal steps beside God. Instead, it paints a beautiful picture of living in close relationship with Him each day. To walk with God is to trust Him, obey Him, seek Him, and allow Him to guide every part of our lives.
Throughout the Bible, several people are remembered for walking with God, and each one teaches us something different about what that looks like.
Enoch: Walking in Faith
Genesis tells us something remarkable about Enoch. “Enoch walked with God; then he was not there because God took him.” (Genesis 5:24)
Only a few words are written about Enoch, yet they tell us everything that mattered most. His life was marked by faithful fellowship with God. He chose to live differently from the world around him, trusting the Lord day after day.
Walking with God often happens in the ordinary moments of life. It is built through daily faithfulness, not extraordinary accomplishments.
Noah: Walking in Obedience
The world during Noah’s lifetime was filled with violence and wickedness, yet Scripture says, “Noah was a righteous man, blameless among his contemporaries; Noah walked with God.” (Genesis 6:9)
Noah’s walk with God was demonstrated through obedience. Even when God’s instructions seemed unusual and no one else understood, Noah trusted Him enough to obey.
Walking with God means choosing obedience even when it is difficult or unpopular.
Abraham: Walking by Trust
God called Abraham to leave everything familiar and follow Him into an unknown future. Abraham did not know every detail of God’s plan, but he believed God’s promises and kept following.
Walking with God doesn’t require having every answer. It requires trusting the One who does. Our faith grows as we continue taking the next faithful step, even when we cannot yet see the whole path.
What Does Walking With God Look Like Today?
We may not build an ark like Noah or leave our homeland like Abraham, but God still invites us to walk with Him every day.
Walking with God today looks like:
- Spending time in His Word so we can know His heart.
- Praying honestly and often.
- Obeying what Scripture teaches.
- Trusting Him when life feels uncertain.
- Repenting when we sin and accepting His forgiveness.
- Loving others the way Christ loves us.
- Following Jesus one faithful step at a time.
Walking with God is not about perfection. Every believer stumbles at times. The difference is that we continue turning back to Him, relying on His grace, and allowing Him to shape us into the image of Christ.
God has always desired relationship with His people. From Enoch to Noah, from Abraham to today, His invitation remains the same: walk with Me.
