Finding God in the Quiet

There are moments when the world feels unbearably loud. Notifications buzz, schedules fill up, and our minds race from one responsibility to the next. Even when we long to spend time with God, we can find ourselves rushing through prayer or reading a few verses before moving on to the next thing.

But God often meets us in the quiet.

One of my favorite places to be still is outside. Whether I’m sitting on a porch, walking through the woods, or simply watching the sun rise over a field, nature has a way of slowing my heart. The wind through the trees, the songs of birds, and the warmth of the morning sun remind me that God is present, that He is both powerful enough to create the world and personal enough to care for each one of us.

The Bible tells us, “The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” (Psalms 19:1)

Creation isn’t something we worship, but it is something that points us to the One who is worthy of our worship. Every mountain, every flower, every stream, and every living creature reflects the creativity and majesty of its Creator. The beauty around us is an invitation to lift our eyes beyond the creation and toward the God who spoke it into existence.

I think that’s one reason I love being outdoors. It’s one of the places where the distractions of life seem to fade, making it easier to notice God’s fingerprints all around me. Sitting quietly in nature reminds me that He is still sustaining the world, still keeping His promises, and still working in ways I cannot always see.

Jesus often spent time in quiet places. Before important moments in His ministry, He withdrew to pray. He taught from hillsides, crossed lakes, and walked dusty roads surrounded by the beauty of His Father’s creation. While His purpose wasn’t simply to be outdoors, those quiet places became spaces of communion with the Father.

Maybe we need those places too.

Not because God is only found in nature, He is with us wherever we are, but because the quiet helps us hear Him more clearly. It reminds us to pause, breathe, and remember that we belong to a God who has never stopped holding the world together.

The next time you find yourself surrounded by His creation, take a moment to simply look. Notice the colors, the sounds, and the intricate details that often go unseen. Let them remind you that the God who carefully designed every part of creation also knows you completely and loves you deeply.

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19

Sometimes the greatest reminder of God’s presence isn’t found in another busy moment, but in the quiet stillness where His creation gently points our hearts back to Him.
