When God Changes the Plan

“In their hearts humans plan their course, but the Lord establishes their steps.” Proverbs 16:9

Have you ever had everything planned out, only to watch it all change?

Maybe you expected a new job, a different home, another child, a healed relationship, or simply a season of life that looked different than the one you’re living now.

It’s easy to feel disappointed when life doesn’t follow the path we imagined. We can wonder if we made a mistake or if God somehow forgot about us. But Scripture reminds us that while we make plans, God directs our steps.

Throughout the Bible, God often worked through changed plans. Joseph never planned to be sold into slavery, yet God used it to save an entire nation. Ruth never expected to leave her homeland, but God led her into the family line of Jesus.

Mary certainly didn’t plan to become the mother of the Messiah, yet God’s unexpected plan became the greatest story ever told. Even Jesus’ disciples had expectations of what the Messiah would do. God’s plan was far greater than anything they imagined. Sometimes what feels like a detour is actually God’s direction.

That doesn’t mean disappointment isn’t real. God never asks us to pretend that loss doesn’t hurt. Instead, He invites us to trust that He sees the whole picture when we can only see today’s circumstances.

As a family, remember that God is faithful in every season. His plans may not always be comfortable, but they are always good, and they are always for His glory.

When life changes unexpectedly, hold tightly to the One who never changes.
