Teaching Kids Gratitude and Sacrifice

“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” John 15:13

Memorial Day often marks the beginning of summer. Long weekends, family gatherings, cookouts, and time outside fill the day for many families. But underneath all of those traditions is something much deeper.

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance.

It is a day to honor the men and women who gave their lives serving others and protecting freedoms many of us experience every day without even thinking about them.

For families, this can also become an opportunity to teach children gratitude, compassion, and reflection in simple but meaningful ways.

Children may not fully understand sacrifice yet, but they understand love. They understand bravery, kindness, and helping others. Sometimes, the smallest conversations are the ones that stay with them the longest.

Jesus says in John 15:13 that there is no greater love than laying down your life for someone else. While no sacrifice compares to what Christ did for us on the cross, Memorial Day reminds us that sacrificial love carries deep meaning.

There have been moments where I realized how easy it is to move through holidays without stopping to reflect on the people behind them. We become distracted by schedules, celebrations, and everyday life, but gratitude grows when we intentionally pause and remember.

Teaching children gratitude does not have to feel complicated or heavy.

It can look like:

  • praying for military families
  • writing thank-you notes to veterans
  • talking about courage and service
  • visiting a memorial together
  • slowing down long enough to reflect as a family

Sometimes faith is built quietly in ordinary conversations around the table.

Memorial Day reminds us that love often looks like serving others well, honoring sacrifice, and living with thankful hearts instead of taking things for granted.

And maybe one of the most important things we can teach our children is that gratitude should never only appear on holidays. It should shape the way we live every day.

Family Reflection

What is one thing your family feels especially thankful for today?

Family Activity

Write down several things your family is grateful for and place them in a jar together. Pray over them as a family tonight.

Prayer for Military Families

Dear Lord, today we pray for military families carrying grief, loss, memories, and sacrifice. Bring comfort to those hurting and peace to hearts carrying heavy burdens. Surround veterans, active service members, and their loved ones with strength, protection, and support. Help us live with gratitude and compassion every day. Amen.
